GULFPORT-- Five people were killed in less than 12 hours in two weekend crashes. "It's been a very deadly weekend," Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said. Chris Dafoe, 24 was pronounced dead Sunday at Garden Park Medical Center, bringing to four the number of people killed in a head-on-collision Saturday night on Mississippi 53. Dafoe was a rear-seat passenger in the Ford Mustang 21-year-old William Bradley Downs was driving. Downs' wife, Samantha, 19, was in the front passenger seat. The Mustang was headed eastbound when Deborah Stewart, 38, crossed the center line in her westbound Mitsubishi Endeavor. When the vehicles collided, Patricia Williams, a 25-year-old passenger in the Endeavor, was flung from the SUV. Gulfport Fire Chief Pat Sullivan said the Endeavor burst into flames after the crash. Bystanders pulled Stewart from the burning wreckage. "It was one of the worst accidents we've had out there in a long while," Sullivan said. Stewart and the Downses were pronounced dead at the scene. All four died as a result of blunt-force tramua to the head and chest. Williams was airlifted to USA Medical Center in Mobile where she was listed in serious condition Sunday afternoon. Of the five people involved in the accidents- all from Gulfport- only William Downs was wearing a seat belt, Hargrove said.
