My Life Story & Incident.
James Harms Killed by a 21 year old Drunk Driver
A woman arrested several hours after a four-car collision on Interstate 10 has been charged with leaving the scene and driving under the influence in an accident resulting in death.

Alicia Marie Carmack, 21, is accused in the early Sunday crash that claimed the life of James Harms, 56, of Jacksonville, Fla. County Coroner said Harms died of blunt-force injuries.

Harms, who was pulling a trailer behind his 1989 Buick LaSabre, was moving to Louisiana, where he planned to live with his daughter. A family acquaintance said Harms' dog, traveling with him, was taken to a local animal shelter after the crash and has since been retrieved by a relative.

Westbound lanes were shut down for several hours.

"It was three different accidents but it was the second one that killed Mr. Harms," the Coroner said.

The four vehicles were heading west between mile markers 34 and 35 when the first crash occurred around 3:30 a.m.

The Coroner said preliminary investigation indicates that Carmack, driving a Dodge Intrepid, struck the back of a Mustang driven by a Navy chief. The Mustang struck a concrete wall and turned around, facing east.

Harms, in the center lane, struck the Mustang, and his vehicle was then struck in the rear by a different Mustang. A driver of one of the Mustangs was taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center for treatment. Names of the other drivers were not provided by police.

"Our accident reconstructionist is still trying to piece everything together," said the Deputy Police Chief.

Carmack was held at the County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 bond. Police also charged her with two misdemeanors, driving with a suspended or revoked license and possession of marijuana.
